Montenegro

About the Country

Discover Albania’s beautiful coastline along the Ionian Sea and Adriatic Sea. With affordable living costs, stunning beaches, and a growing expat community, it’s an ideal destination for retirees looking for a more budget-friendly lifestyle.

Visa Options:

  • Residence Permit for retirees: Albania offers a temporary residence permit for retirees, which can be renewed annually. Applicants need to prove financial independence (e.g., pension or income from abroad).
  • EU/EEA Citizens: Citizens of the EU or EEA countries don’t require a visa for stays up to 90 days.

Cost of Living Information:

  • Rent: A 1-bedroom apartment in Tirana (capital) costs around €300–€450/month. In beach towns like Sarandë, you can find rentals for as low as €200–€350/month.
  • Groceries: Grocery costs are relatively low. For instance, a basic grocery bill for one person can range from €150–€200/month.
  • Transportation: Public transport is cheap, with bus fares averaging €0.50. Taxis are also affordable, with rates starting at €3.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Affordable cost of living, especially for retirees.
  • Beautiful coastal areas with Adriatic Sea and Ionian Sea views.
  • Low property taxes and a favorable climate.

Cons:

  • Limited healthcare options in rural areas.
  • Slow bureaucracy, especially for residency applications.
  • Limited job opportunities for non-locals.

Healthcare Notes:

  • Albania has both public and private healthcare systems. Public healthcare is affordable but can be underfunded, while private clinics offer quality care at higher prices.
  • Expats are encouraged to get private health insurance to cover any gaps.

Personal Research Notes:

  • I found Albania to be a peaceful and affordable option. The coastal towns like Vlorë and Sarandë offer affordable living and great lifestyle, but internet speed can be inconsistent.
